The 4 AI Maturity Levels in Education: Where Is Your Institution?

Share:

A Framework to Understand Where You Are

After years of supporting educational institutions, we've identified a clear pattern: AI integration follows a predictable progression. Knowing which level you're at is the first step to advancing strategically.

Level 1: Initial

Characteristics:

  • No institutional use of AI
  • Some teachers use tools on their own
  • No specific training or guidelines exist
  • AI is perceived as a threat or something foreign

The risk: Falling behind while other institutions advance. Students use AI on their own without pedagogical guidance.

Next step: Create an exploratory working group and conduct an initial diagnostic.

Level 2: Exploratory

Characteristics:

  • Workshops or conferences on AI have been held
  • Some departments experiment with tools
  • No coordination between initiatives
  • AI policies are reactive (ban or allow)

The risk: Scattered efforts that don't generate institutional impact. Innovation fatigue without visible results.

Next step: Define a clear institutional vision and appoint a person responsible for AI strategy.

Level 3: Developing

Characteristics:

  • An institutional AI strategy exists
  • Ongoing teacher training is offered
  • Protocols for AI use in assessment and teaching exist
  • Some impact indicators are measured

The risk: Stagnating in partial implementation. The strategy staying on paper.

Next step: Scale best practices across the entire institution and establish learning impact metrics.

Level 4: Advanced

Characteristics:

  • AI is integrated into the pedagogical model
  • Teachers use it autonomously and reflectively
  • Real impact on student competencies is measured
  • The institution shares its experience and generates knowledge
  • A continuous improvement cycle exists

The risk: Complacency. AI evolves rapidly and what's advanced today may be insufficient tomorrow.

Next step: Stay updated, research, and share learnings with the educational community.

How to Advance Between Levels

The key is not to jump directly to Level 4. Each transition requires:

  1. Honest diagnostic of where you are
  2. Clear purpose of where you want to go
  3. Action plan with measurable milestones
  4. Expert accompaniment to accelerate the process

Speed doesn't matter as much as direction. An institution that advances with purpose will go further than one that runs without direction.
